MOOC

The term MOOC stands for 'massive, open, online, courses' and has been attributed to Dave Cormier (Cormier, 2008). Common variations of this term include xMOOC, cMOOC, and other derivatives such as SOOC (Dalton et al., 2015) or LOOM (Caines, 2016).

The history of the concept is best described in this CC licensed image from Yuan and Powell (2015).
