Into the Labyrinth : A PhD Comprehensive Portfolio

Appendix C: Conference Contributions

I have attended and presented at conferences throughout my academic career. The Educational Computing Organization of Ontario (ECOO) conference and the CanConnect conference are two in which I have long history of presentations through my background as an educator. While these conferences continually fuel my mind and provide much needed renewal to my teaching practice, the strategic shift toward higher education conferences with a focus on open education and teacher education that further support my PhD research initiatives.
Since beginning the Joint PhD program, I have served as a conference proposal reviewer for several open education focused conferences. What I’ve learned about reading and reviewing conference proposals is the need to write clearly and succinctly about your research and to provide engaging activities for audience participants when presenting. I reviewed over eight proposals in both 2019 and 2020, and provided specific and actionable feedback on these proposals, for the Open Education (OER) conference organized by the Alternative Learning Technology (ALT) group in the UK. I have reviewed proposals for the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) conference and the first ever Open/Technology in Education, Society, and Scholarship Association (OTESSA) conference as part of the Canadian Congress of the Humanities and the Social Sciences (Congress) scheduled for May/June 2020. I am also currently the chair of the conference proposal reviews for the International Society of Technology for Education (ISTE) Inclusive Learning Network after serving as proposal review committee member for many years. Each year there are over 35 proposals reviewed as part of this conference process.
As a direct result of the Joint Phd program, and my growing confidence as an academic author, I wrote peer reviewed conference proposals which have been accepted for the OER20 conference and the CSSE conference through both OTESSA and CATE sub-conferences.
  1. OER20, April 2, 2020: An ethos of care in a cross-cultural collaborative mentoring project with UNESCO Open Education for a Better World (OE4BW). This session is in collaboration with Dr. Rekha Chavan from Mumbai, India and our co-authored paper about our mentoring experiences through the OE4BW program.
  2. CONGRESS 2020 – May 31-June 2, 2020. The CSSE and OTESSA presentation final proposal submissions.
    1. OTESSA: From parasocial to social: Examining how video engages relationships – coauthored in collaboration with C. Hendricks, University of British Columbia, A. Caines, University of Michigan, Dr. J. Murphy, Kenyon College, and R. J. Hogue, University of Boston.
    2. OTESSA: Open ethics: Shifting practices from the periphery to the center – coauthored in collaboration with Dr. J. Hayman, Cambrian College, and Maureen Glynn, Trent University.
    3. OTESSA: Cross-cultural mentoring: A pathway to build professional relationships across boundaries – coauthored in collaboration with Dr. Rekha Chavahn, Women’s University, Mumbai, India.
    4. CSSE: Foregrounding the human face of learning: Assumptions and principles of course design – coauthored in collaboration with Maureen Glynn, Trent University.
    5. CSSE: TETCs and OEPr: A personal reflection in transforming teaching practice – sole authorship and presentation focusing on the teacher educator technology competencies (Foulger et al., 2017) reflected through an open educator’s lens.
Beyond these selected conference contributions this Appendix lists additional conference presentations I've made, with links to the openly accessible slide deck or web site created for these sessions.
